The law school dean and a Superior Court judge typically speak at the luncheon, where VLP thanks each of the students for their participation. Students who complete at least 50 hours of pro bono or public service work are eligible to receive recognition upon graduation. The Boyd Service Award is bestowed at graduation on students who have completed at least 100 hours of service. The student is awarded a plaque and his or her name is also engraved on a permanent plaque which remains in the law school. The recipient must have maximized their opportunities for growth in the legal community by actively engaging in multiple academic and extra-curricular activities including, but not limited to, legal journals, moot court and other skills competitions, clinics and field placements, College of Law student government, College of Law faculty/student committees, public interest, and officer-level leadership in student organizations. The J.D. GW Law also partners with the GW Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service to recognize students who have submitted 100+ hours with silver graduation cords and the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, which consists of a gold-silver-or-bronze lapel pin signifying the number of hours submitted up to 250+.
